Selfie Study

Selfie Study examines self-documentation, as well as the juxtaposition of old and new. Self-portraiture is no new phenomenon. Only in recent years has it become so easy to do – first with the invention of the camera and more recently the camera phone. I have always viewed the selfie as very personal, whether the image is made for ourselves or others. A group of selfies can include as much or as little context and information, such as background, style of dress, and other people, as the photographer wants. The piece that binds them together is the photographer being in front of the camera, while simultaneously triggering the shutter. I have created a documentation of a documentation of a failed experiment in documenting myself with a large format camera the same way I have previously documented myself with an iPhone. By using three different cameras at the same time, a “mirror within a mirror” effect emerges.
